Chestnut-headed Bee-eater pair with a butterfly
Chestnut-headed Bee-eater pair portrait
The Chestnut-headed Bee-eaters first appear in the nesting location in late December and have already formed pairs. For most of January the birds will drill some exploratory holes but seem to spent a lot of time chasing insects from high perches.
Mating Sequence 1; Pretend to be indifferent to each other. The male is on the left....not an obvious difference between sexes.
All last year I saw about 6 matings of the Blue-throated Bee-eaters but none of the Chestnut-headed. I was thinking they do it in the dark ours of the morning like the Kingfishers.....but I was wrong
Mating Sequence 2; He sidles down the branch towards her
Mating Sequence 3: They make contact
Mating Sequence 4; If the female bends forward she indicates she is ready. Sometimes she appears to give a hint and he is finds more interest in the scenery.
Mating Sequence 5: The mating appears to be a combination and rape and rodeo
There was another amorous couple........the full moon must have an affect.
