This Chestnut-headed Bee-eater chick gets its first glimpse of the outside world. It was stationed just inside the nest entrance to receive the stream of insects being brought in. An hour later it flew off in a successful fledging. The head is green at the front, likewise the Blue-throated chicks have a completely green head.

I considered these the best, or they have a story to tell, from shooting locally in Northern Malaysia for the first half of 2012

Bee-eaters spend quite a lot of time preening.....especially when spending time excavating nest cavities. They often end a preening session by fanning their tails or stretching their wings. I was treated to a double tail fan on this occasion.

Brahminy Kites are relatively common coastal raptors in this region and they ofter overfly the Bee-eater nesting grounds. This one however was photographed on the Northern Malaysian Island of Langkawi.

Greater Racket-tailed Drongos are relatively common lowland forest birds and are good mimics of other bird calls.

A Blue-throated Bee-eater tracks an insect close to the ground. Sometimes a downward parabolic dive will miss the ground by inches.

Bee-eaters and Kingfishers are related and the latter also have preening sessions following by wing stretching. Here is my star male doing a wing stetch.

A Red-billed Gull does a snatch and 'run'

The male White-throated Kingfisher with his latest frog victim. He later swallowed the frog in one gulp.

This is a situation that is all too familiar. This pair of Magpie Robins had a nest on this tree. The male on the left had obviously messed up with something and was getting some verbals from the female.......who of course takes the higher ground.
