There were several Checker-throated Woodpeckers at Bukit Pangkor. They appeared to belong to an extended family with the chicks fledged several months previously.

White-breasted Waterhen reflection. Although relatively common this species always seems to be moving and is difficult to photograph. This one was snapped in the ponds at Byram with the reflection adding some impact.

Male Californian Quail. The native New Zealand Quail was uncommon during early European settlement in NZ and considered extinct by about 1870. Californian quail were introduced to Nelson in 1865 and other parts of NZ soon followed. Today quail are the most common upland game bird in both the North and South Islands. New Zealand has three species of quail; california, brown and bobwhite. California quail are spread throughout New Zealand, while brown and bobwhite quail are more prevalent in the North Island.

A Chestnut-headed Bee-eater fans a tail and stretches a wing at the end of a grooming session.

Juveniles from the previous nesting were assisting with supplying nests with insects at a number of nests. Juveniles can be discerned by the green feathers on the head and with residual central tails feathers.
